World Horticultural Expos In China
Two other cities in the People's Republic of China have hosted the World Horticultural Expo previously.
Kunming (Yunnan Province) hosted the event back in 1999. This was themed as:
Man and Nature, marching into the 21st century
The site is still extant and is used for a local expo every year, currently in October. The site is noted for its topiaries as well as its Bamboo Garden, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Garden and Bonsai Garden.
Shenyang (Liaoning Province) then hosted the event in 2006. This was themed:
man live in harmony with nature
The main features were a huge (125 metre tall) lily-shaped sculpture and over 3500 different varieties of roses.
Qingdao (Shandong Province) is due to keep the tradition alive and will host the event in 2014.
2011 World Horticultural Expo in Xi'an
The 2011 World Horticultural Expo is themed as:
Eternal Peace & Harmony between Nature & Mankind, Nurturing the Future Earth
It will be held on a new site in Chanba District, between the airport and the downtown.
The expo is expected to bring some 10 million visitors to Xi'an (that's 50 000 per day on average, though 200 000 are expected on peak days).
The Site Design
The design of the site was put out to international competition and won by PlasmaStudio architects. Their masterplan, entitled Flowing Gardens, takes Circulation as its key factor. A single stream enters the grounds and then diverges much as a river does on enterings its delta. The water enters a lake but this is not the end; that same water is cleaned naturally by reed beds and then re-used in the irrigation systems that keep the whole in pristine condition.
The site will have three main buildings:
Gate Building: There will be a formal gate building that allows access to the site. This is positioned so as to give visitors a side-on view of the main axis and therefore an idea of the layout.
Exhibition Hall: This amazing building is positioned on the main axis beside, and even over, the lake. Yes - the structure is cantilevered out beyond the banks, perhaps to break down the physical boundary but certainly to provide a better angle for views over the lake. A ramp leads to the top of the exhibition hall and many visitors are sure to head up there for a better perspective too.
Boats will leave from near the Exhibition Centre for pleasure trips across the lake.
Greenhouse: The artificial climate zones induced by a greenhouse are always of interest but this structure is meant to be an interesting and attractive feature in itself. The tunnel is contorted into a horse-shoe shape creating a central space on the outside - if that's not a contradiction in terms. A third dimension is added by the craetion of a pathway through this centre an up over the greenhouse structure.

I shall be in Xi'an in a couple of weeks time, and I had read about this Expo in 2011. Maybe I will be back in China then and will get a chance to visit it. Thanks for your post. It looks and sounds great.
I am a dutch economist with a very great interest in Xi'an and I think that the exposition is going to be a beautiful example of chinese ingenuity and shows that there is not only a lot of pollution of the environment, there is also a keen interest in solutions for those problems.
i will be in xian on this expo because it is going to be help in a famous historical city of china.
I was wondering if there are any concerts or shows that will be performing during the course of the Xian 2011 Expo?
Great hub. I lived in Xi'an for two years back in 94'-95' and would love to take in this expo if time and circumstance permitted.
xi'an is an old city which is my planning!
I have been at the expo in Xian, and I have to say that it is so cool. They really have done a perfect job to make everything looking so nice. There are 50 shows every day so whenever you will go, there are always something to look at.
Hope many people will go there and see the beautyfull place.
Hi Ian.
Some of the highlights I thought was very cool is the light in the tower at night, and all the light over the lake. Also when you drive home at night then all the trees is lightet up. Some of the rocks at the street also change coulers and many buildings around the area have some pretty cool light shows.
I will stay here until the end of the expo. Hope to see you all there.
We want attend the expo we are 20 persons
Fordie, What a compelling, inviting, persuasive summary of the 2011 World Horticultural Expo in Xi'an! It's disappointing to have missed all the beautiful, exciting, great learning fun of inspecting the flowing gardens. In particular, I like the theme of harmony between humans and nature.
China is such a wonderful venue for herbaceous and woody plant-related events. It's so interesting to witness the country's respect for what works combined with willingness to go down new pathways.
Were you able to attend any of the expos held in China? If so, which is your favorite? It sounds to me like 2011 might have been mine.
Thank you for sharing, voted up + all.
Respectfully, Derdriu
